Italian Military Research
Italian Military records start with the Lista di Leva, a conscription list created from birth records. Military service is mandatory since Unification (1861), so some records start in 1841. They are housed in the provincial archives and arranged by birth year and town. The Matricolare list those who completed mandatory military service. Sometimes they have a province-wide index. Military deaths are reported to the town of birth, complete with place of burial. There are a few Italian Military cemeteries (Sacrario) around Italy and other locations where war dead are kept. The WWII POW repatriation cards can be accessed, showing identifying information and locations of capture, release, and imprisonment. The US has some Italian POW records, although most were returned to Rome in 1955. There are Italian POW burials in the US and other nations. The Vatican Apostolic Archives contain more POW records.
