RG 389 in the National Archives are the records of the Provost Marshal General, the group responsible for the POWs. There are a couple of handouts available at the National Archives in College Park Maryland briefly describing these records. A more detailed description of the records I've used the most follows.

NARA RG 389, Entry 464, Boxes 1471-1474 are the decimal File of the ISU and contain files for some men (Italian and American) involved with those units.

Boxes 1505 -1507 contain all Italian Personnel (ISU and POW, officers and enlisted) in Continental US 1945. They are in six alphabetical files, two to a box. Declassified NND770120. These rosters have been scanned to CD and are available at www.gentracer.com/powcd.html.

NARA RG 389 Entry 466, Box 1 contains the Rosters of Deceased Italian Prisoners of War (World War II), Prepared by the Prisoner of War Information Bureau on 10 March 1952 with supplementary list #1 from 2 July 1952. It is also titled World War II Enemy Prisoners of War Deceased in Theaters of Operations, Section II, Italian. Declassified. 913002. These lists show the name, rank, their POW number, date of death, cause of death, and place of burial. These lists include 2,878 Italians, plus Japanese and Germans.

Boxes 50-51 were documents created on 16 May 1955 by the Office of the Provost Marshal General, Dept. of the Army. The set contains 3 volumes, comprising the List of Italian Prisoner of War Records Transferred to the Italian Government. Prepared by the Enemy prisoner of War information bureau, Ft. Holabird, Baltimore 19, MD. Declassified NND 913002.

They pertain to Italian Prisoners of War held in US custody during WW II. They contain only the names and internment serial numbers of 182,183 Italian Prisoners of War, with supplemental list appended to Vol. 3.

Many Italian POWs were used for Labor in the Mediterranean and on the Alcan highway, so won't be listed in the lists for the continental US.
