Directions: Take the Certosa offramp off the A1 and take the highway from Firenze to Siena to the first offramp. That offramp is marked with a brown sign saying American Cemetery. The Cemetery is the consolidation of the men who died in Northern Italy (and occasionally other locations). The burials started here in 1949 as they re-interred men who had been buried at Castelfiorentino, Pollonica, Marzanello Nuovo, Mirandola, Pietramala-Mt. Beni, Tarquinia, and Vada (Porte Rosse in Castellina Marittima). The monument was completed in 1957. There are 4402 burials here, including 209 crosses marking the remains of unknown soldiers. There is also a wall of the names of the 1409 men whose remains were in unknown locations. An asterisk marks those names whose remains were later identified.

Headstones – we took a quick trip (an hour or so) through the cemetery in November and took photos of the large number of Italian-Americans and some others of interest to us. In March, we took pictures of every headstone in Section A. Those photos are being added to these pages shortly. This is, of course, a fraction of the population of this cemetery and we'll gladly post with credit any photos of the rest of these headstones (heavy overcast days produce the most easily read headstones).

For free photos of specific headstones, contact the cemetery at florence@abmc.gov.
