This list of Prisoner of War Camps, Italian Service Unit Camps, and Prisoner of War Hospitals is based on weekly reports located on NARA microfilm #66-538 (population lists June 1942-June 1946). Additional locations based on newspapers, interviews, and other NARA records (at College Park and Regional Archives).
The POW Camps in West Virginia during World War II included:
•Ashford (Camp), White Sulpher Springs, Greenbrier County, WV (POWs originally buried here were transferred to Fort Knox Cemetery in Ft. Knox, KY)
•Ashford General Hospital, White Sulpher Springs, Greenbrier County, WV, now The Greenbriar Hotel, before and after the war
•Baker General Hospital (Newton D.), Martinsburg, Berkeley County, WV (under Ashford, WV), now part of the Veterans Medical Center
•Logan General Hospital, Logan, Logan County, WV
•Rainelle, Greenbrier County, WV (branch camp under Ashford, WV)
Enemy alien internment camp:
•White Sulpher Springs, Greenbrier County, WV (Japanese)
Cemeteries:
•Ashford General Hospital, WV (transferred to Ft. Knox in KY)
