This list of Prisoner of War Camps, Italian Service Unit Camps, and Prisoner of War Hospitals is based on weekly reports located on NARA microfilm #66-538 (population lists June 1942-June 1946). Additional locations based on newspapers, interviews, and other NARA records (at College Park and Regional Archives).
The POW Camps in South Dakota during World War II included:
•Belle Fourche, Butte County, SD (branch camp under Robinson, NE)
•Black Hills Ordnance Depot, Igloo, Fall River County, SD (base camp), renamed Black Hills Army Depot in 1962, closed in 1967
•Meade I (Fort), Meade County, SD (branch camp under Robinson, NE)
•Meade II (Fort), Meade County, SD (branch camp under Robinson, NE)
•Provo, Fall River County, SD (branch camp under Scottsbluff, NE)
•Sioux Falls, Minnehaha County, SD (branch camp under Algona, IA)
•Yankton, Yankton County, SD (branch camp under Algona, IA)
