During WW I, German Prisoners of War and enemy aliens were held at Fort Douglas in Utah. The 21 prisoners who died during that time are buried at Fort Douglas Military Cemetery. They included 19 enemy aliens and two POWs.



All of the World War II Prisoners of War who died in Utah are buried at Fort Douglas Military Cemetery in Salt Lake City. A list of these men follows, along with some of the other POWs held in Utah.

POWs buried at Fort Douglas Cemetery:

Luigi Barilaro was born on 15 February 1914 at Fagnano Castello (Cosenza province, Italy) and was married to Azolia Angelina. Died from chronic kidney problems on 30 May 1944 at Bushnell General Hospital, Brigham City, Box Elder County. (UT Death #75) He was imprisoned at Ogden Depot and is buried in the Italian POW section of the Fort Douglas Military Cemetery.


Ignazio Bonasora (#T-75058) was born on 9 October 1913 at Salemi (Trapani province, Italy) and single. Died when his forklift collided with a freight car on 2 October 1945 at the Station Hospital at Utah ASF Depot at Ogden, Weber County. (UT Death #453) (NARA RG 389, Entry (A1) 467, Box 1513) Buried in the Italian POW section of the Fort Douglas Military Cemetery.


Otto Bross (Uffz. #8WG-46386) was born on 16 November 1919 at Pferzheim, Germany and was single. Died from gunshot wounds on 8 July 1945 at the Prisoner of War Camp at Salina, Sevier County. (UT Death #59) (NARA RG 389, Entry (A1) 467, Box 1513) Buried in the German POW section of the Fort Douglas Military Cemetery.


Luigi Canevari (#8WI-28731) died from fall on head when attempting escape by jumping off the train transporting him from Ft. Lawton, WA to Bushnell General Hospital, Brigham City, Box Elder County on 9 July 1944. (NARA RG 389, Entry (A1) 467, Box 1513) Buried in the Italian POW section of the Fort Douglas Military Cemetery.


Salvatore Cantello was born on 5 August 1918 at an unknown location and was single. Died from chronic kidney problems on 26 February 1945 at Bushnell General Hospital, Brigham City, Box Elder County. (UT Death #22) Buried in the Italian POW section of the Fort Douglas Military Cemetery.


Giovanni Cincotta (#7WI-31883) was born on 26 January 1920 at Lipari (Messina province, Italy) and was single. Died from hanging himself on 8 August 1945 at Ogden Arsenal, Ogden, Weber County. (UT Death #365) (NARA RG 389, Entry (A1) 467, Box 1513) Buried in the Italian POW section of the Fort Douglas Military Cemetery.


Nicola D Augenti was born on 31 May 1922 at Torre a More (Bari province, Italy) and was single. Died from heart attach due to a reaction to surgical anesthesia during circumcision on 27 August 1943 at the Station Hospital at the POW camp at Harrisville, Weber County. (UT Death #428) Nicola D-Augento, 21, Italian prisoner of war, died at the Internment Camp Post Hospital last Friday at 3 p.m. from a heart attack. He had been an internee at the camp since last April. Funeral mass was held at the POW compound at 6:45 am on Saturday (28 Aug) with the entire prison population in formation. Chaplain Frederick H. Chase, Jr., 1st Lt. Chaplain Corps U.S. Army officiating. The body was taken to Fort Douglas for military burial (News of the Week, 3 September 1943, front page, Utah ASF Depot, Ogden, Utah) His headstone shows he was an Apprentice Seaman in the Italian Navy. He had arrived at Ogden Depot in April 1943. He is buried in the Italian POW section of the Fort Douglas Military Cemetery.


Paul Eilert's original headstone was paid for and placed there by his fellow POWs with permission by the Americans. The graphic on the stone showed that he was awarded the Iron Cross in 1939, a military honor, not a political statement. His current headstone is standard issue. Paul Eilert was born on 9 June 1905 at Berlin, Germany and was single. He died from cancer on 8 June 1944 at Bushnell General Hospital, Brigham City, Box Elder County (UT Death #81). He is buried in the German POW section of the Fort Douglas Military Cemetery.


Bruno Forzellin (#T-70245) was born on 16 December 1920 at Minerbe (Verona Province, Italy) and was single. Died from injuries sustained in an auto accident while AWOL on 9 December 1945 at the Station Hospital at Utah ASF Depot at Ogden, Weber County. (UT Death #104) (NARA RG 389, Entry (A1) 467, Box 1513) Buried in the Italian POW section of the Fort Douglas Military Cemetery.


Ernst Fuchs (Uffz. #8WG-59260) was born on 19 January 1921 at Kirchberg-Hunsrueck, Germany and single. Died from gunshot wounds on 8 July 1945 at the Prisoner of War Camp at Salina, Sevier County. (UT Death #58) (NARA RG 389, Entry (A1) 467, Box 1513) Buried in the German POW section of the Fort Douglas Military Cemetery.


Gottfried Gaag (Uffz. #8WG-32844) was born on 3 June 1916 in Germany and was single. Died from gunshot wounds on 8 July 1945 at the Prisoner of War Camp at Salina, Sevier County. (UT Death #63) (NARA RG 389, Entry (A1) 467, Box 1513) Buried in the German POW section of the Fort Douglas Military Cemetery.


Hans Gabriel was born on 28 September 1924 at Regensburg, Germany and was single. Died when metal box fell from crane on him, crushing his chest on 13 August 1945 at Utah ASF Depot, Ogden, Weber County. (UT Death #374) (NARA RG 389, Entry (A1) 467, Box 1513) Buried in the German POW section of the Fort Douglas Military Cemetery.


Paul Heimerdinger was born on 2 February 1915 at an unknown location. Died from bronchial pneumonia on 13 September 1945 at the Station Hospital at Utah ASF Depot at Ogden, Weber County. (UT Death #421) Buried in the German POW section of the Fort Douglas Military Cemetery.


Karl Heinrich was born at an unknown date in Czechoslovakia and was single. Died from chronic kidney problems on 6 August 1945 at Bushnell General Hospital, Brigham City, Box Elder County. (UT Death #118) Buried in the German POW section of the Fort Douglas Military Cemetery.


Sebastiano Indomenico was born on 24 May 1902 at Floridia (Siracusa province, Italy) and was married to Francesca Belmonte. Died from heart problems on 10 June 1944 at Bushnell General Hospital, Brigham City, Box Elder County. (UT Death #83) He was imprisoned at Ogden Depot and is buried in the Italian POW section of the Fort Douglas Military Cemetery.


Georg Liske (Wachtmeister, #8WG-45637) was born on 16 August 1913 in Germany and was married to Antomie Liske. Died from gunshot wounds on 8 July 1945 at the Prisoner of War Camp at Salina, Sevier County. (UT Death #56) (NARA RG 389, Entry (A1) 467, Box 1513) Buried in the German POW section of the Fort Douglas Military Cemetery.


Herman Maas was born on 5 May 1912 at Ilshofen, Schwabia, Germany and was single. Died from bronchopneumonia on 15 July 1945 at Utah ASF Depot, Ogden, Weber County. (UT Death #327) Buried in the German POW section of the Fort Douglas Military Cemetery.


Alfred Malinowski (soldat, #81G-253485) was born on 12 September 1925 at Danzig-Langfuhr, Germany and was single. Died from work accident with forklift on 27 December 1944 at Utah ASF Depot, Harrisville, Weber County. (UT Death #651) (NARA RG 389, Entry (A1) 467, Box 1513) He was a soldier in the 45 Regiment of the German Army. Buried in the German POW section of the Fort Douglas Military Cemetery.

Angelo Meli was born on 24 April 1922 at Aragona (Agrigento province, Italy) and was single. Died from chronic kidney problems on 4 September 1944 at Bushnell General Hospital, Brigham City, Box Elder County. (UT Death #131) Buried in the Italian POW section of the Fort Douglas Military Cemetery.


Hans Meyer (Uffz., #8WG-47461) was born on 29 August 1920 at Messenthin, Germany and was single. Died from gunshot wounds on 8 July 1945 at the Prisoner of War Camp at Salina, Sevier County. (UT Death #60) (NARA RG 389, Entry (A1) 467, Box 1513) Buried in the German POW section of the Fort Douglas Military Cemetery.


Adolf Paul (Sgt., #8WG-9969) was born on 5 February 1917 in Germany and was single. Died from gunshot wounds on 8 July 1945 at the Prisoner of War Camp at Salina, Sevier County. (UT Death #62) (NARA RG 389, Entry (A1) 467, Box 1513) Buried in the German POW section of the Fort Douglas Military Cemetery.


Vincenzo Pazzi (#T-70271) was born on 24 August 1921 at Gela (Caltanissetta province, Italy) and was married to Carmelina Pazzi. Died from appendicitis and peritonitis on 28 August 1945 at the Station Hospital at Utah ASF Depot at Ogden, Weber County, (UT Death #395) Buried in Italian POW section of the Fort Douglas Military Cemetery.


Francesco Rabbai (#5WI-5695) was born on 24 October 1921 at Canale Monterano (Roma province, Italy) and was single. Died from chronic kidney problems on 26 May 1945 at Bushnell General Hospital, Brigham City, Box Elder County. (UT Death #73) He was a private in the Italian Army. Buried in the Italian POW section of the Fort Douglas Military Cemetery.


Heinz Rascher was born on 1 April 1920 at Leipzig, Germany and was single. Died from cancer on 20 July 1945 at Bushnell General Hospital, Brigham City, Box Elder County. (UT Death #107) He was a Corporal in the German Army. Buried in the German POW section of the Fort Douglas Military Cemetery.


Erich Raschke was born on 29 August 1902 at Leipzig, Germany and was married to Maria Raschke. Died from arterio sclerosis on 28 August 1945 at the Station Hospital at Utah ASF Depot at Ogden, Weber County. (UT Death #397) Buried in the German POW section of the Fort Douglas Military Cemetery.


Friederich Ritter (Sold., #31G-2602763) was born on 13 November 1896 at Frankfort-Main, Germany and was married to Berta Ritter. Died from gunshot wounds on 13 July 1945 at AAF Regional Station Hospital, Kearns, Salt Lake City. He was the last to die of the men shot at Salina on 8 July 1945. (UT Death #1122) (NARA RG 389, Entry (A1) 467, Box 1513) Buried in the German POW section of the Fort Douglas Military Cemetery.


Francesco Ruffino (#T-68254) was born at an unknown date and location and was single. Died from septicemia on 7 June 1945 at Utah ASF Depot, Harrisville, Weber County. (UT Death #255) He was also a private in the Italian Army. Buried in the Italian POW section of the Fort Douglas Military Cemetery.


Karl Schaefer was born on 4 September 1907 at Wiem, Austria and was married to Josephine Schaefer. Died from self-inflicted hanging on 5 May 1945 at Bushnell General Hospital, Brigham City, Box Elder County. (UT Death #57) Buried in the German POW section of the Fort Douglas Military Cemetery.


Shigeo Shibata (#42J-187) was born on 3 August 1922 in Formosa, Japan. Died on 31 July 1944 at Bushnell General Hospital, Brigham City, Weber County from gunshot wounds in combat 6 months earlier. (UT Death #115) (NARA RG 389, Entry (A1) 467, Box 1513)


Fritz Stockmann (Uffz., #31G-202170) was born on 23 January 1921 in Germany and was married to Jutta Stockmann. Died from gunshot wounds on 8 July 1945 at the Prisoner of War Camp at Salina, Sevier County. (UT Death #57) (NARA RG 389, Entry (A1) 467, Box 1513) Buried in the German POW section of the Fort Douglas Military Cemetery.


Walter Vogel (Ofeldwbl., #81G-279919) was born on 17 December 1912 at Rossach-Franken, Germany and was married to Emma Vogel. Died from gunshot wounds on 8 July 1945 at the Prisoner of War Camp at Salina, Sevier County. (UT Death #61) (NARA RG 389, Entry (A1) 467, Box 1513) Buried in the German POW section of the Fort Douglas Military Cemetery.


Hans Wieland was born on 10 October 1915 at Nuernberg, Germany and was married to Betti Wieland. Died from cancer on 30 January 1945 at Bushnell General Hospital, Brigham City, Box Elder County. (UT Death #13) Buried in the German POW section of the Fort Douglas Military Cemetery.


Fritz Wiemken was born on 6 November 1899 in Friedrichschleuhe, Germany and was married to Henny Wiemken. Died from a brain tumor on 28 January 1945 at Bushnell General Hospital, Brigham City, Box Elder County. (UT Death #14) He was a Sgt. in the German Army. Buried in the German POW section of the Fort Douglas Military Cemetery.
